Going with the Flow: Online Business Credibility and Credit Cards by Joseph Schaefer

Building your business from the plastic on up is a good idea for a handful of reasons. Financing your business with credit cards, not the topic of conversation. Appealing to your current customers and potential customers is the topic at hand.

You're as fake as plastic

That dated comment may stand true if a customer is to rely solely on credit cards; the danger of over-spending is a very real problem. The nature of online business, however, practically demands that customers finance goods and services with credit cards. The exchange of money online is done with plastic and/or other means that do not involve exchanging cash or checks. That doesn't make consumers fake, but it does present point number one of 'why' accepting credit cards online promotes surefire credibility and leaves those who don't in a world possibly considered 'fake' or without reputation. That leads us to credibility.

Today's Buzzword: Credibility

A business that provides credit card processing as such an option, along with the option to use varying cards, adds a brick to the brick and mortar of businesses credibility. Even though the customers don't particularly know what the process is behind a business' ability to accept credit cards, the aura of being able to use credit for goods and services is worth its weight, well, way beyond plastic. It's not a ploy, rather it is an ingrained message of serious business when a customer finds an eCommerce or eRetail site that accepts credit cards. The mantra is “These folks must be good.”

Cash and Checks: The New Rotary Phones

Not exactly, but you get the idea. Cash and checks are being factored out. Shoppers are tending to use plastic payment in lieu of cash and/or checks, not only online but in face-to-face money exchanges. The ease and convenience is winning out on the use of paper payment. If a business is not accepting credit cards, they are losing quite a large audience. Some call it a 'bounce rate'. When a web-savvy customer quickly notes the payment scheme that does not involve using credit, she or he will bounce off the site quickly in order to find an 'authority' who does.

Businesses large and small should follow the school of fish in order to maximize their turn-over potential. Why lose targeted visitors to a competitor, especially when you have exactly what they want?

Cash? What cash?

The credit card industry, whether consciously or not, is making way for vast societal change. They are seeking consumers that choose to ditch carrying cash and checks and credit card companies promote the practice.

This is true as they promote their message to business owners as well. The rewards programs and other amenities of handling credit cards rather than cash or checks makes it enticing to use credit for business-related payments. It's a credit to their credibility as well as adding credit to their business' finances. Some companies that offer credit card processing merchant solutions also provide unsecured business cash advances that help build your business by helping with expenses.
