Having The Right Mindset Is Crucial To Succeeding In Your Network Marketing Business by Jaz Lai

To succeed in network marketing you need to have a success mindset. Without a success mindset you may not survive the first few months in a network marketing opportunity, let alone go the distance. Remember, network marketing is quite different to whatever you have trained to do. It will have taken you a few years to train to get a job in your specialized field so you will understand how much time and effort you need to put in order to succeed as a professional network marketer.

Many people think that in order to succeed in a network marketing organization, you must have the best company, the best team, the best compensation plan, and the best product. This is not the case. There are other factors that affect success. Let’s examine them in more detail:

- Thinking you are the best at something will send out the message that you believe other companies or products to be inferior in some way. Speaking or behaving like this only damages your own integrity. No one likes to meet someone who criticizes others â€" especially if they actually work for the company you are tearing down. And, in reality, there is no best of anything. There is only different, and some products and opportunity are more suitable to one than to another.

- Some people will be attracted to vitamins or healthy eating plans, others to household equipment, others prefer gadgets, others beauty regimes. We are all different and no one product can interest everybody. Therefore there can be no best MLM opportunity, only different ones for different people.

- Compensation plans are helpful in the long run but if you can’t get off the ground and attract your first downline, even the very best compensation plan won’t help you get back your investment.

The key is to learn how to grow your business without relying too heavily on your upline. There are there to support you and help you, as this also benefits them in the long term. If you make the mistake of taking advantage of your upline, this is what the consequences can be:

In network marketing the principles of Karma are even more forceful when you consider the effects of duplication in a network.

When you don’t take advantage of your upline, but instead you show them respect and support and go the extra mile to help them out, your downline will see your example and want to do the same for you. This will be invaluable in the longer term, and far more valuable in terms of profit than going for the short term solution. Loyalty pays dividends in a network and you can make it work for you. The more groups or legs you have within your network and the more they are all emulating your example of loyalty and hard work, the faster your network, and your success, will grow.

However, if you aren’t loyal to your upline and talk negatively about him there is no reason why your own downline won’t do the same to you and soon you’ll be in very deep water indeed.

The Importance Of Critical Health Insurance by Francisco Segura

Business travel has actually increased considerably in the last decade as companies are able to sell more readily to markets all around the world; despite improvements in global communication systems. The problem is that business travel is renowned for causing stress and fatigue. Seasoned travelers may already be aware of the business travel tips below but if you are a new member of the business travelers club then you may find the information very useful.

When baggage goes missing it is irritating to say the least but for someone on a business trip it can be a whole lot more disastrous. The answer to this is to ensure you have everything you need in your hand luggage. Although it means taking more on the plane it does mean that whatever might happen you will be prepared for your meeting.

Regular travelers know that the main business travel tip when packing is to keep things simple by only including exactly what you need for the journey and that way you won't go far wrong if luggage goes missing. To keep this simple just work out how many days you will be at your destination and pack accordingly, remembering to pack a few items of casual wear plus just enough pieces of footwear to last; this would be one pair for work and another pair for play. The remaining items to pack will be toilet essentials and any other work related documents that aren't important.

A way to save space and possibly take a smaller bag plus reduce any creases is to roll clothing up which takes up less room and a business travel tip well worth noting. To go one step further, if you want to ensure that even if food or drink are spilled on your clothes you won't need them laundered; use dark colors which are also handy because creases don't show as much. If you are delayed for any reason then knowing you can freshen up prior to the meeting without the need for a shower can be a lifesaver, this is where those travel wipes come in very useful.

Cell phones and other related equipment normally have good battery life but don't forget to take a charger if you are going to be somewhere for more than a few days. Many business travelers now use the traveling time to do as much work as possible which then allows them some personal time to themselves after work which in turn reduces stress. By following these few quick and handy tips you should find that you will not be on the back foot and no matter what happens during your travel on business, you should have a successful trip. There is no reason why you shouldn't enjoy your business travel so adhering to the few, very simple business travel tips given here will make your journey more enjoyable.

Traditional Christmas Trees and the Holiday Spirit by Marlia Brightston

One of the many special things that help to make magical Christmas memories is the brightly decorated family Christmas tree. It is the centerpiece of the Christmas holiday decorations in most homes.

Christmas trees are not only the main focus of homes that have been decorated for the holidays, they can also be found in many public places such as offices, malls, and squares. These trees make the holidays feel much more festive. To most people Christmas doesn't really begin until after the traditional lighting of the town's official tree; thus starting a month-long string of holiday events.

Some people are actually taken aback somewhat to learn that the origin of the Christmas tree actually stems from pagan rituals of ancient times. As the pagans were converted to Christianity, their use of the evergreen tree, symbolizing renewal of life, was incorporated into Christian tradition.

Many different folk tales describe the origins of the Christmas tree as we know it today. Germanic tribes held the belief that Patron trees were sacred, and medieval myths referred to the miracle of evergreen trees "flowering" during the Christmas season. The shape of an evergreen has also been linked with the holy trinity of Christian belief, which is symbolized by a triangle.

The origin of the much-loved traditional Christmas tree is accredited to the Germans, as they are thought to be the first people to bring live evergreens into the home to decorate. This was long before electricity was first used. Looking back, it's hard to imagine anyone placing lit candles on a very flammable Christmas tree, but that was the tradition. The tips of the tree's branches would support tiny candle holders, complete with actual candles that were attached very carefully.

For the last century or so, a wide variety of festive lights have taken the place of the candles that used to be placed on the tree. Some families enjoy choosing Christmas tree lighting that adds technological flair to the holidays - chasing, changing, and flashing lights run by tiny computer chips. Others select lighting reminiscent of their own childhood Christmases.

A family's ornaments are a visual record of the memories of past holidays. Children especially attach emotional importance to the Christmas ornaments. While the traditional decorating scheme of holiday ornaments is most commonly used, many people choose to forego tradition by creating theme trees, such as a beach tree covered in seashells.

The purchase of a single special ornament for each individual child every Christmas is what some families cherish. This way the children will have their own collection of favorite ornaments to use as the basis of their Christmas tree decorations when they get older.

It is almost certain that family holiday celebrations will continue to revolve around the Christmas tree, helping to spark and encourage the spirit of Christmas as it maintains its primary role as the symbol of the Christmas season.

How To Harness The Power Of Brand Management by Dr Alan Dowler

Although it is possible to dress it up in different subtle words such as the ‘drive for shareholder value’, at this moment in time, many businesses of all sizes are simply struggling to make money.

Many are cutting back on costs, some are reviewing product investment, and most are slugging it out to win the very few sales that are around.

In some parts of industry, however, business leaders are also taking a closer look at a well-proven method of creating value: brand management.

It is surprising that brand management is not more generally recognised to be the powerful tool that it is. It certainly has more impact than many things attempted over the past 20 years by different management teams.

During that time companies have not hesitated in reaching for passing management fashions such as ‘total quality management’, ‘process re-engineering’ or dot.coms as a means to create profit. These fads, sponsored by pundits, gurus, or the City, have come and gone, with dubious impact on organisations and their profits.

But by contrast, a number of companies have managed brands, with their associated price premium, in different markets over many decades. They have shown that it is possible to create an entity which appeals to a group of customers and, over time, becomes a very valuable asset.

This flies in the face of much recent management thinking (that everything is changing fast and that price is constantly under pressure) but it is, nonetheless, true. It is astonishing that more companies have not invested extra resources and attention into what is a proven technique.

Unfortunately, brand work tends to involve a wide spectrum of activities. At one end, creative companies help to design new images such as the international tail fins for British Airways or new names such as Consignia. These projects attract public attention and sometimes criticism or even ridicule.

At the other end, journalists have challenged the ethics and integrity behind brand building, suggesting that brands exploit consumers, causing them to pay more than they should for the goods on offer.

The range of experts operating in the field of brand management proliferates by the day. In addition to professional brand managers in large corporations, there are strategists, design consultants and valuation specialists.

Yet it is still hard to define exactly what a brand is and as a result, many companies have ignored, to their detriment, the precious role that brands can play in the life of both companies and customers. It is therefore possible that industry might miss a very powerful, proven source of profit.

Despite the disparity of work, it is beyond dispute that a carefully designed image rests in the memory of customers and helps them to buy. We also know that numerous firms have proved that, by managing that image carefully, a product or a service will appeal time and time again to a group of interested customers. It becomes a familiar part of their life, giving them consistent benefits in their day-to-day life.

As a result, they will pay a premium for this offer and develop a loyalty towards it. But this does not mean that this incremental cost is not valuable to them. Quite the opposite. Over time, they become fond of these entities and, if they think about it, regard them as part of the landscape of their life.

What starts as simple reassurance about quality or consistency becomes, on a deeper but harder to measure level, an emotional bond in a hectic modern lifestyle of constant pressure and change.
As a result there are people who feel warmth towards a tin of paint, a sugar-filled drink or sports shoes. In fact these items mean so much to them that they can be as upset and unforgiving if they think a favourite brand has been damaged, as when a favourite soap character is killed off.

So why hasn’t this marvellous technique been more fully adopted by all businesses? The answer lies in the fact that truly adopting brand management often involves major changes to an organisation.

The company must become market, rather than supply-driven. Customer segments need to be clearly defined and their needs understood in detail. Branded propositions then need to be created, giving direction to sales, service and operating functions.

Large firms do not typically have the political commitment to radically alter the balance of power in their internal operations in order to achieve this longer term benefit. They have to be driven there by relentless market forces, often going through traumatic management change en route.

Smaller companies, on the other hand, can be daunted by the world-class power of better known brands like Coca-Cola or Nike. They forget that many successful brands, such as Uniliver, Virgin or Body Shop, were built from scratch by business leaders with very modest initial resources.

However, whether brand success has resulted from vision as with Mars or luck in terms of Virgin or the ravages of the market as has happened with the motor industry, the steps needed to succeed are well-known.

It is possible for any sized firm to create a brand which customers prefer and pay a premium for over many years. But first they must first understand the key customer groups; second, understand their rational and emotional needs; third, design a clear, unique proposition; and fourth, deliver consistent, reliable benefits over time.

In order to thrive, companies of all sizes need to take a hard-headed look at brand management. This has been shown in different sectors of the world to produce real value over time and guard against the ravages of the market.

Advertising in a Free Marketing - It’s Free- it’s out there, Use it! by Tamela kanz

When I think back when I first started my bakery - too many years ago, I had to bring free cakes to local churches and if someone had a party, I had to make sure my cake was freshly decorated and on the main table for all to see (business cards easily accessible of course). The good news is that all those free custom decorated cakes ended up paying off; and after about 6 months my budget allowed for the small little square in the yellow pages. Remember that, you had to count on the yellow pages to spread the word to your LOCAL customer possibilities " and the costs were enough to feed a third world country from. Both my experience with working in the courtroom and working with hundreds of people in a community allows me to make it work - without spending over my budget. Now, with over 10 million people on the internet - from all over the world - not only are your target customers diversified in every possible way, your customer base becomes over 10 million (minus yourself and any enemies you may have acquired over your years). Just give me 50 cents for each one of them; right? Years from that bakery and stronger than ever in the marketing world…..I want to welcome you to free marketing BIG time! It is a whole lot easier than free cakes because I don’t have to spend nearly the time to bake and decorate, drive them to wherever they were being displayed, and I don’t have to stand there and watch everyone obliterate my hard work. Free advertising! It’s everywhere! Take advantage of it! First I would look at least 100 to see what you are comfortable " what would sell you in your business? Free ezines…write some up and google “free ezines” " post them everyday! Start every morning with posting free ezines. Get them out there people look at them. Your businesses will get out there. Think of the possibilities! Free advertising/marketing with free classifies. Write a classified ad. Check out others. How would your business gain customers/clients…what did you write in your ezine? Write different ones. Mark them so you can keep track of them, which ones do the best and which ones can you trash with all those paid advertisement receipts. I know you are hearing and I am too about the amount of 2.0 advertising is breaking all records. Take advantage of it. So you don’t want to go on camera, make up an affective PowerPoint presentation " or make up a skit, film it, start a Myspace, Facebook, or any of the thousands of social networks that are coming out - put it on there…All free..and a totally huge market. Get some business cards. Put them everywhere - Of course not where they are going to be thrown away. Try your doctor’s office, leave them in some magazines. Put them on the grocery store bulletin board, you got the idea. Think about where people are hanging out and would love to read one of your cards.Talk to people at the grocery store, the gas station, the hair salon. Peopl appreciate friendly people, they want what you have. Another Really Big market is writing articles….I love it….and here you are reading it. It’s fun. People get to know you and admire you and what you have to say. People trust people that know their stuff and are willing to allow 10 million people read it. Write an article. Find something that interests you, something that pertains to your business, something that you know about…whatever. Just remember to sign it, and place your business under your signature. You have earned the right. Above all, enjoy yourself. It’s time for you to be a great marketer! Good luck in your business! Going with the Flow: Online Business Credibility and Credit Cards by Joseph Schaefer

Building your business from the plastic on up is a good idea for a handful of reasons. Financing your business with credit cards, not the topic of conversation. Appealing to your current customers and potential customers is the topic at hand.

You're as fake as plastic

That dated comment may stand true if a customer is to rely solely on credit cards; the danger of over-spending is a very real problem. The nature of online business, however, practically demands that customers finance goods and services with credit cards. The exchange of money online is done with plastic and/or other means that do not involve exchanging cash or checks. That doesn't make consumers fake, but it does present point number one of 'why' accepting credit cards online promotes surefire credibility and leaves those who don't in a world possibly considered 'fake' or without reputation. That leads us to credibility.

Today's Buzzword: Credibility

A business that provides credit card processing as such an option, along with the option to use varying cards, adds a brick to the brick and mortar of businesses credibility. Even though the customers don't particularly know what the process is behind a business' ability to accept credit cards, the aura of being able to use credit for goods and services is worth its weight, well, way beyond plastic. It's not a ploy, rather it is an ingrained message of serious business when a customer finds an eCommerce or eRetail site that accepts credit cards. The mantra is “These folks must be good.”

Cash and Checks: The New Rotary Phones

Not exactly, but you get the idea. Cash and checks are being factored out. Shoppers are tending to use plastic payment in lieu of cash and/or checks, not only online but in face-to-face money exchanges. The ease and convenience is winning out on the use of paper payment. If a business is not accepting credit cards, they are losing quite a large audience. Some call it a 'bounce rate'. When a web-savvy customer quickly notes the payment scheme that does not involve using credit, she or he will bounce off the site quickly in order to find an 'authority' who does.

Businesses large and small should follow the school of fish in order to maximize their turn-over potential. Why lose targeted visitors to a competitor, especially when you have exactly what they want?

Cash? What cash?

The credit card industry, whether consciously or not, is making way for vast societal change. They are seeking consumers that choose to ditch carrying cash and checks and credit card companies promote the practice.

This is true as they promote their message to business owners as well. The rewards programs and other amenities of handling credit cards rather than cash or checks makes it enticing to use credit for business-related payments. It's a credit to their credibility as well as adding credit to their business' finances. Some companies that offer credit card processing merchant solutions also provide unsecured business cash advances that help build your business by helping with expenses.

Advice and summary:

Do some research in order to find reputable iso agents who can answer frequently asked questions in detail.

Credit card processing can lead to more website visitors so be aware of your site's bandwidth usage. Your hosting company can give you more information in regards to how much traffic will incur additional hosting charges.

When your site receives increased traffic (and if it is designed properly), you may need to be aware of how much product to stock.

Your Internet Business: How to Succeed Where Others Fail by Chris Robertson

If you're in the market for a business opportunity, the chances are good that you've explored a variety of ways to make money online and work from home. In truth, there are so many Internet business opportunities out there that it's almost impossible to tell the best from the rest. And the grim reality is that, while thousands of people launch online businesses in the hope of achieving financial freedom, the majority end up making very little money at all, or worse, paying out more money to their uplines than they're ever able to recoup.

The good news is that, with the right partnership, you can promote your existing business while multiplying your revenue streams. That way, you don't have to rely on a single, make-or-break source of income. It's a bit like planting a garden. It would never cross your mind to plant a single seed in the spring and count on that to feed your family throughout the summer. Instead, you'd plant many varieties of seeds, knowing that one or more will bear fruit as the seasons progress.

The Internet business partner you choose should be one that can provide you the one thing that is the downfall of most work from home opportunities: training. All too often, people who intend to succeed come up against their own limitations and fail to properly market their products. In our garden analogy, that's like planting your seeds in a drought - why bother? The company you select should have a proven track record of Internet marketing success, and give you the water spigot and hose you need to tend to your business garden.

So, make sure to look for a company that provides you with training on topics ranging from online and offline marketing to back office functionality and goal setting. They should also be equipped to provide you with tutorials on a wide variety of powerful marketing techniques. After all, there's stiff competition on the Internet, and in order to successfully compete, you need to know all there is to know about methods such as article marketing, blogging, email marketing, banner advertising, press releases, pay-per-click advertising, and viral marketing - just to name a few.

At the same time, being knowledgeable about Internet marketing doesn't mean that you need to reinvent the wheel. Instead, look for a business opportunity that provides you with tools like professional lead capture pages, automated follow-up, a sales center, and a secure website. Ideally, they should also provide you with highly sought after products that you can re-sell - items like audios, videos, software, templates, and guides. This way, you can increase those revenue streams by earning a healthy commission on every sale, and still have the professional infrastructure in place to promote your existing business.

When you know what to look for, it's not difficult to separate the best Internet business opportunities from the dregs. In no time at all, your seeds will have sprouted, your plants will bloom, and you'll be reaping a bountiful harvest.

Planning today, enjoying in the future by Francisco Segura

Taking care of your family in the future is all about financial planning and one of the fastest growing methods to achieve this financial freedom is through investing. From real estate to mutual funds, there are no real limits to investing money; it really is up to you. This is how many people believe the will achieve financial security and a way to provide for their family in the future. While the subject is very large, the information listed here is for guidance only and further information should be sought before you jump-in with both feet.

The stock market is a great place to make money, and if you intend on doing this with stocks and mutual funds, it is highly recommended that you first carry out some research on the companies you wish to invest in. Over time, the stock market is a good bet for investors but it should really be viewed by novices as a long term proposition as a quick-buck is often only something the professionals will make. The safer option, and also one that can be used for long term profit as well, is real estate and buying a house can increase in value considerably. Many people buy homes that need upgrading and this is a way to buy them at a knock down price but it should be remembered that to sell on a house for a profit requires a little more than just a coat of paint.

Before considering this option carry out some research because there is more involved than has been mentioned here; something that does is not so much of a problem with the next area to be looked at. Today, since the advent of the internet and secure websites, online trading has become the fastest growing sector for investment and all from the comfort of your own home. Using a computer, this group of people comes from all walks of life and this allows them to be a trader who performs his or her own company research before they decide to buy or sell. This form of speculation must be done by a person with a strong sense of discipline because many people become addicted to the biding and find themselves losing money faster than they can earn it.

If you plan on investing, make sure you educate yourself in the market and means in which you wish to proceed. Whatever field you find most interesting, the key to long term success is research, plain and simple. Once again, the internet can help with forums and sites devoted to supplying tips and tricks for successful online investment, use these and learn from the experience of others. I know many people that thoroughly enjoy investing this way and having control over an investment portfolio; I also know a few who approached it the wrong way and lost large sums of money in the process so be one of the wise ones.

Buy Customers Instead of Matol Leads by Darrell Lischka

MLM Update - You Can Now Buy Customers - Not Leads

Business in Good Times and Bad Times by VMT Singuillo

Millions of people think that business is good only during those times when the economy is doing good. However, it is unthinkable that there are also businesses that thrive even during the worst of times.

In today's problematic economy, let us try to examine some situations where some businesses are still making good.

The real estate problem has indeed affected many home owners. Foreclosures seem to be everywhere, and people are loosing their homes. Sales of homes have indeed dropped severely that real estate agents and other real estate related businesses are loosing their jobs and incomes.

On the other hand, because people are loosing their homes, apartment units have become in demand. People certainly have to find a place to stay, thus apartment businesses are thriving real good.

With the rising fuel prices, some automobile companies are loosing businesses. But some automobile companies have experienced higher sales. Fuel efficient cars have become very much in demand, while automobile companies that sell trucks and SUV's that consume too much gas are loosing a lot of sales.

It cannot be denied that both in good times and bad times, there will always be both winners and losers. Therefore, there is wisdom in the axiom that says, do not put all your eggs in one basket. There is wisdom in diversifying your business.

While it is true that focusing on one type of business is good, you also run the risk of loosing your business during those times when your business is not in demand. So, if you plan to put up two different companies selling only SUV's, what happens to your business in times like these today?

Therefore, if you have plans of building two or three different businesses, perhaps it would be wise to select two or three types of different business ventures. Or maybe involve yourself in selling two or three different types of products. Perhaps you may have a retail business while the other one is a business dealing on an affiliate program.

No wonder there are people who work for one company and at the same time join a home business opportunity instead of taking on a second job. Maybe they would be selling Max GXL on the side. Simply put it this way, there will always be good times and bad times. And in whatever situation, some businesses will be able to thrive in it.

Telecom Expense Management Vital for Cell Phones by Peter Verhoeff

Industry sources estimate that a quarter of telecom costs are now spent on wireless, which amounts to a U.S. total of about thirty-three billion dollars a year. While landline telephone services have dropped dramatically in price in recent years, the costs of cell phones and other wireless devices and services are more than making up for that reduction, emphasizing the need for telecom expense management (TEM).

These days most traveling salespersons and executives are provided with a cell phone paid for by the company. When used for business purposes these can undoubtedly improve corporate effectiveness and profitability, but without oversight these resources will tend to become underused, overused, misused or abused.

In about half the companies, not only is mobile usage unmonitored, but often cellular charges are hidden among other items in employees’ expense reports, so that executives have no more than a vague idea of their monthly wireless costs. The result is that companies are often unaware that they are grossly overpaying for their wireless services.

In order for a company to get a handle on cell phone usage, centralization is necessary. Once all wireless service invoices for the company are received at one central location, it will become feasible to get a more accurate idea of monthly wireless costs. The next step should be to centralize procurement of wireless devices and services as well. This will make it possible to standardize on a limited number of carriers and to negotiate favorable terms.

A case in point is a corporation with about twenty-two thousand employees worldwide, with about ten percent of them using company-paid cell phones. A telecom audit revealed that the company was paying about 25 cents per minute of cell phone usage. This high price was largely the result of roaming charges and employees who exceeded their monthly maximum number of minutes. When this was corrected, the cost per minute dropped to about half that amount.

Company PBX systems have for a long time provided call detail records (CDR) on landline telephone usage, where origin, destination, time of day, date and duration are recorded for each call. TEM software can collect and store these CDRs, compute their cost and compare the data against carriers’ invoices. Some TEM providers now also provide this capability for cell phones. With certain adaptations to the cell phone, CDRs are made available to the TEM system, which makes it possible to manage wireless usage and control costs. Wireless cost reductions of typically over twenty percent have been reported.

Once usage patterns are known, policy can then be evolved to optimize wireless usage and to negotiate better terms with carriers.

Which services can I get along with Web-Hosting? by Francisco Segura

People who want to have a website, blog etc. will need a web hosting organization which provides an Internet storage facility. Any type of web content including websites can then be accessed by users and some of these services are free although they will have restricted facilities; however, most are paid services.

There are a great many services available; you even have free hosting where you won't have to spend a single dime, this is ideal for absolute beginners. For more storage space, better email facilities, sub domains and more you really need top look at paid web hosting plans; this is particularly pertinent for business customers.

Most people and companies start their hosting by using a shared server system which means your files are on the system with other peoples. It is usually possible to upgrade to have a dedicated server for your files once you know the service provider is reliable; there is normally an additional charge for this facility. A web hosting plan is no good unless you have a registered domain to use, then you can use this in conjunction with the storage space to save your files, website etc.

When you have a paid web hosting package it will allow you to have an email address using your domain name unlike those that are offered free with the likes of Google, Yahoo or MSN for example where their name is at the end of the email address. Having your own email addresses are an important sign that a person or company is serious about their internet presence and provides a sense of credibility which cannot be achieved with the many free service providers available. Then you have bandwidth, which refers to how much data is being transferred over the internet, this is something that many people overlook simply because they're enamored with the low prices of hosting packages and don't consider how quickly bandwidth is used up.

This point becomes more important when you have a site that provides large video, audio and image files to its visitors as all of these use up the bandwidth you have been allocated as part of your package. Although it is possible for a person to use their own PC as a host, there are many security dangers associated with this so using a dedicated web hosting company is preferable.

Big Cash For Big Information

Ever since the first gumshoe paid his favorite informant $20 for the name of the doll that shot Mr. Big three times in the head with his own .45, money has been the motivator for getting the right information from those who have it.

Leap forward a few decades and the biggest payday was recently made by Burt Rutan and Paul Allen who were paid $10,000,000 bucks by the X Prize Foundation when their private rocket made it into space. Sure the foundation also got an event out of the money in the form of a space flight, but make no bones about it, what they were really paying for was the information about how to get a man into space twice, with private money.

Such is the development of a growing trend to tap into minds of geeks and creative entrepreneurs everywhere to solve the riddles of today faster than normal progress might allow, by offering an ever-increasing flow of large amounts of money. In fact, the current X Prize Foundation contest dangles another $10,000,000 for the winner of a race between clean production-ready cars that exceed 100 MPG. The deadline is 2009 and 2010 and already there are 45 groups approved to at least qualify for the prize.

There are more:

$10,000,000 offered by Google and The X Prize Foundation for a private mission to the moon, travel 500 meters, and send data back to Earth.

$25,000,000 offered by Richard Branson to create a commercially feasible way to remove greenhouse gasses from Earth's atmosphere.

$10,000,000 offered by the X Prize Foundation to an enterprise that can sequence 100 human genomes in 10 days at a cost of $10,000 per Genome.

$1,000,000 offered by Netflix to improve automated movie recommendations.

$1,000,000 offered by the Department of Defense to create a lightweight garment that provides 20 watts of electric juice for 96 hours.

$1,000,000 offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute to solve seven unsolved math problems.

$500,000 offered by NASA to build a machine that autonomously excavates simulated lunar rock during a timed event.

$300,000 offered by CAFÉ Foundation, NASA to build a small aircraft that is easy to operate as an automobile and has an 800 mile range.

$400,000 offered by NASA to build a glove that makes it easier for astronauts to manipulate objects.

These are just the start of the big money that will follow. Yet, think about it. What does Sir Richard risk with $25,000,000 if someone can give him a commercially feasible way to eliminate greenhouse gases from earth. How many hundreds of millions of dollars could he ultimately make from that prize?

How to apply the big Idea.

Our goal in these pages is not to just present Big Ideas but to present practical applications for our clients. Ask yourself what mystery exists in your industry? How can you use this concept of Cash for Information on a smaller scale in your own Backyard?

Could a doctor offer a $50,000 prize for a commercially feasible supplement to help his patients?
Could a pest control company offer a $25,000 prize for a new non-toxic way to eliminate pests?

Could a local hospital offer a $1,000,000 prize for a cure for Breast Cancer?

Could a Bank offer a $100,000 prize to solve a local public service problem?

The answers are yes and the other ideas are endless. Creating a prize particularly one with a noble cause to help others would create great buzz for the company. Not only would there be news articles on announcement of the concept, but updates on the progress as well as news coverage again at the end of the contest...particularly if there was a winner. If the Prize was also designed around a commercial application there would be ongoing press as well as real profits form producing the products generated from the discovery.

There are many real applications to this idea which you could use on a small or large scale. You can do good, make money, and get great PR. Not a bad triple punch.

Web-Hosting, choosing the right one makes the difference by Francisco Segura

When a company or a person decides to have an online presence or other internet based project they will use a service called web hosting. Sometimes it is part of the service an internet service provider supplies as part of their package when you sign up with them and can be supplied at no charge.

People first starting out with free hosting should consider if having a free package is what they need because although these supply almost everything needed to create and host a site, they are not a match for a service that is paid. When a person realizes they want to host additional sites and store other digital products, they may find that the range of facilities for unpaid web hosting plans is too limited.

Initially, the majority of users decide on paying for a shared server with their hosting company. This will enable you to see if you have chosen a very good company; then change to a dedicated server with your company when you're comfortable with their services. However, all this is academic if you haven't registered a domain name that you can use in conjunction with the web hosting and to send your files to.

The good thing about having your own web hosting package and domain means that all your email addresses will contain your domain name in them and not that of the free service provider you may have been using previously. If you have a business presence online you cannot afford to have another company's name at the end of your own e.g. www.yourcompanyname.hostingcompany.com when it should really look like this: www.yourcompanyname.com. Another problem to consider is called bandwidth which is essentially how much digital data is being transferred using your domain name and will affect the cost of the hosting package, this needs to be considered carefully.

If you only have a small site that does not have much on it then this probably won't concern you but as soon as audio, video and hi-resolution images are incorporated, it becomes more of a concern. Some people and web hosting companies decide to become their own web host but this is not recommended as the security issues involved are huge unless you are proficient in this area, it is something to be avoided.

Top Tips To Wholesale MP3 Players From China by leslie chan

Nowadys, more and more people are doing business with China wholesaler. A fast growing business opportunity on the Internet is wholesaling MP3 players from China. MP3 players purchased directly from China wholesalers typically cost up to 40 percent lower than average wholesale prices. This leaves plenty of room for profit when reselling products to your customers. Below are 7 steps about how to wholesale mp3 players from China.

Step 1 Locate one or more suppliers of MP3 players in China. Research the companies you are considering doing with business with to make sure they are legitimate wholesalers. If you are sourcing from overseas, you may not have the luxury to converse face-to-face with your suppliers. The only handles you have are their track record. You may check out their business practices at Better Business Bureau if they are located in US. If not, find out which are the national or government agencies that govern business registrations and licensing. Drop a note to find out if there have been complaints lodged against them. Of course, there are other avenues to find out more such as work-at-home or auction forums. These are great places to educate oneself on the reseller business and be alerted to scams.

Step 2 After you have decided your wholesaler, find a web hosting site to set up a website for reselling your MP3 players. You will need to decide if you want a designated or shared serving hosting company. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Shared servers are considerably less expensive and may prove to be adequate for small business. Dedicated servers are more expensive but may be necessary for large business.

Step 3 Sign up for a PayPal merchant account which will allow you to process customer orders using credit cards.

Step 4 Establish a shipping agreement with one or more shipping companies for ground, air and ocean shipping options.

Step 5 Decide on warranty and return policies for your customers and make sure these are accessible on your webpage.

Step 6 Advertise your MP3 site on the internet. A good, inexpensive way to do this is by approaching owners of other sites that compliment yours and requesting to do a banner exchange program with them. This will allow you to advertise your site on their site in exchange for them advertising on yours.

Step 7 Register with the internet search engines to help bring traffic to your site.

Improve Your Shopping Cart and Your Business by Matthew Bredel

While there are many decisions involved in developing a successful online business, few are as important as choosing the right shopping cart software. A good shopping cart can mean the difference between sales and a frustrated customer leaving the website before completing a purchase.

When customers visit your online business, a primary goal should be to make the entire website as user-friendly as possible. This aspect is never more important than it is when it comes to your shopping cart. With dozens of shopping cart software options available, there are certain features to look for that set you up for success when it comes to your site’s shopping cart.

Making sure your customers feel secure purchasing items from your site is a top priority. If there is something about your shopping cart that does not run smoothly, the customer will likely begin to feel unconfident about the shopping experience and decide to take their business to another site.

Creating a sense of security for your customers involves going with a quality shopping cart software"one that has a professional site appearance and excellent customer service. Look for programs that offer a variety of choices and features for your site, so you can customize the shopping cart tool to do what you need it to do.

In addition, you want to choose a product that provides great customer service and technical support for both the site visitor and owner. Make sure it has support within the shopping cart software, such as FAQ sections or user manuals and help menus.

It is also vital for the software to be free of errors, so that your customers do not have to deal with error messages, which will send them away from your site in a heartbeat.

The two categories of shopping carts include externally hosted and locally hosted. Externally hosted means your site’s shopping cart is outside of your website. When customers select an item to purchase from your site, they are sent to a secure shopping cart on your provider’s website to complete the purchase. While this option may cost a little more, you do not have to deal with installation of the software.

With the locally hosted shopping cart, you are downloading and installing your cart software. You have flexibility and creativity to tailor your shopping cart to your site and the software typically comes with customer service and technical support. For security purposes, you will likely need to pay for a secured server when using the locally hosted shopping cart.

One product that seems to offer a great option for externally hosted shopping cart software is 1ShoppingCart, also known as 1AutomationWiz. It provides services covering not only the shopping cart, but also the autoresponder and affiliate system. It takes a lot of the hassle out of developing your customer base and bringing in return customers.

As you are striving to make money online, you realize it takes more than an eye-catching website design, great product, effective advertising and even enthusiastic affiliates. Focusing on selection of the best shopping cart software for your site will keep your bases covered and sets up your online business to obtain the sales numbers needed to meet your goals.

How Much Time Does Your Staff Spend Selling? by Carl Davidson

We were doing a small seminar last week when we noticed that only one company in the room actually had a sales department. The rest thought they did and probably would say they did but when we analyzed the situation, they realized they actually had misplaced their sales department a few years ago and hadn't noticed.

This led us to the realization that sales departments can be inadvertently misplaced and closed. This is extremely detrimental to the business because a business without a sales department is just a ghost of what it could be.

Has your Sales department disappeared or been misplaced? Here are a few ways to find out.

Percentage Of Time Analysis

One of the companies at the seminar was composed of the owner and 4 salespeople. It would appear that this is a large sales force. However, a time analysis revealed that all but one spent 10% of their time (about 4 hours per week) on sales. The rest of their time, they did service and sales of other products, paperwork, service calls etc.. Counting heads is not as accurate as counting hours. We suggest you take an accurate count of the amount of time each employee spends on actual sales activities - prospecting and doing demos. The result may surprise you. How much time is your sales department actually selling?

Number Of Sales Presentations

Another way to measure the size of your sales department is a game we call "Count The Presentations". Take an accurate count with customer names of the presentations or sales visits performed last week. First, calculate how many presentations is a day's work in your industry. If you sell complex products to businesses, it could be one per day. If you sell in-home to consumers, it could be two per day. If you sell by phone, it could be 30 per day. Take your total presentation that should be done each day and divide by the number of presentations per day that should be done. The number you get from tthis formula represents the real number pof salespeople on your team. If it is less than you expected, you need to hire or refocus your current team on sales.

Hours Of Operation

It is a proven fact that customers prefer to buy when they are too busy. We do better when we make it easy for the customer tpo buy. So for most consumers that means evenings and weekends are the prime selling time. Business people don't want visitors at their busiest times and restaurants want no salespeople during their peak traffic periods. Does your sales staff work these prime selling hours or are the stuck with the nine to five mentality?

One way to see how much actual selling is going on is to see what percentage of prime selling time your team is in the field. If you set the "golden selling time" as 5 to 9 Monday to Thursday and Saturday, that is a total of 24 hours per week. Measure what percentage of those hours your staff is out selling and you have a good measure of the percentage of a sales force you actually have. If you have 4 salespeople who are in the field 50% of those hours, we believe you will find you should discount the size of your sales force by 50%.

It is also interesting to me that many companies who struggle in sales have new recruits and part timers working the best sales hours. This is a serious handicap to success. It just doesn't pay to have your experienced and talented staff in when fewer customers come by and your least experienced and successful team on the floor when most buyers come in.

Call Back Success

Another measurement of sales success is the number of sales generated each week from calling prospects who did not buy at their initial appointment and getting another chance to get the sale get the sale. Good companies add about 15% to total sales from call backs. If your percentage is less, you are leaving money on the table that could be in your pocket. For example, my wife and I visited a large furniture store yesterday but did not buy. Could a call from a manager asking why, get us back in? Yes it could. Further, they would find out from the call why we did not buy. This would allow them to make decisions from actual (and valuable) customer feed back.

Focus & Importance

Another interesting measure of your sales department is the focus of your company and the importance of sales. If you company believes that anything other than presentations and sales is important today, you don't have a sales department. If the first question on everyone's mind today is how many did we present and sell last yesterday, how many will we do today, you have a sales department. If that is the last thing on the minds of your staff, you do not. Ask each of your staff members what is the most important thing on their minds today. The result may surprise you. If the answer is anything but presenting and selling, you will benefit from changes.

Sales Or Customer Dis-Service?

Another interesting measurement of your sales department, is its membership. Is anyone a full time salesperson? Just as important, is EVERYONE focused on selling? Do you keep track of the number of appointments generated per call-in? Do you train your entire staff on how to use calls to generate sales? Does your delivery staff call on neighbors of your customers to see if they your products or services? Do your techs ask customers if they have any other needs? If not, these staff members are overhead when they could be an important part of your sales department.

If you take these tests and find you have misplaced your sales department in the years since you opened for business, now is the time to take steps. Without sales, a company withers and dies. You have the power to direct every member of your team to sell every day. Costs do not rise from focusing on sales but income rises dramatically. No matter how many sales you make each month without a sales department, you deserve to sell a lot more.

We suggest you keep this article and take these measurements monthly to see if you are making progress. The funny thing about sales departments is the moment you take your focus of them they begin to disappear.

Most yoga professionals either ignore or abhor the sales process and the idea of closing a sale would be even less appealing. Unfortunately, sales and marketing are the foundational functions that keep every business alive and growing and every successful business owner is selling and closing, whether they know it or like it. Selling is much more about educating and telling, then pushing and listening. A truly good sales person, whether they are selling yoga or widgets, is a master at determining their clients/students needs and finding solutions for them. The sooner each business owner realizes the importance of selling and closing and makes a decision to educate themselves on techniques and principals associated with selling and closing, the sooner their business will grow.

Closing is the last step in the sales process; asking your prospective student/client for their business. Although closing is a critical step, many people skip it unintentionally. They assume their prospect will automatically give them their business. Although this does occur occasionally, closing the sale is as important as crossing the finish line at the end of a race.

Many people resist "closing" for fear of rejection. Don't be afraid to close and ask for the business, whenever possible. You will know when your prospects' interest is high, so take advantage of the timing by asking for their business or for asking them if they would like to take a class. Don't be afraid to close because in most cases, if you unsuccessfully attempt to close, you are both informing your prospect of your intent (to offer them your service/product) and you will receive an instant indicator as to where they are at in the sales process.

Frequently, people express interest by asking for details about you and your service. Use this as a guide that their interest is high and a close at this time could be the nudge that puts them over the hump. If they don't commit after your initial close, there is some type of objection standing in the way. Try to determine the objection or concern and, if you can address it, try to close again.

Trial Close:

To close your prospective students, you must determine their level of interest. You can do this by using a "trial close". A trial close is usually a question that gets the prospect thinking about the possibility of using your services. For example, a car salesman may use a trial close with an interested buyer by asking them what color they prefer. If the buyer answers with a color, the salesperson knows the buyer's interest is high. They have obviously imagined themselves owning the car of a particular color. You can use a trial close, as well, to determine your prospective students level of interest. In fact, trial closes builds interest by getting your prospect to think of you as a potential teacher for them. Trial closes are usually posed as questions, such as:

* Have you ever taken a yoga class before? * When do you think you would like to start?

Assumptive close:

Another effective closing technique is an "assumptive close". This is simply a statement that implies that you will do business with your prospect. Like the trial close, the assumptive close gets them to think of you as a service provider. It can also be used throughout the sales process to determine and build interest. Unlike the trial close, the assumptive close is usually posed as a statement, such as:

* When you come to your first class you will need to bring your own sticky mat. * When you sign up for class you can either pay for a single class or you can purchase a series of classes.
The close should be a very conscious part of the sales process and when you enter into a closing opportunity, confirm that you have:

* Familiarized yourself with closing options * Thought out ways to overcome objections * Successfully created enough interest in your service * Have mental and emotional clarity about closing * Have clear pricing objectives * Have prepared a way to accept payment

Alternate choice close:

Another powerful closing technique is called the "alternative choice close". This technique gives your prospective student several options on any particular aspect of your service.

The alternative choice close is usually posed as a question that prompts your prospective student to consider how to do business with you versus whether or not to do business with you. It can be done throughout the sales process. Some examples are:

* Are you considering taking classes during the week or over the weekend? * Would you like to come in for your first class tomorrow or on Thursday?

When using the alternative choice close, try to limit your choices to two options. Once the prospect answers the question by selecting one of the options, have them commit to specifics immediately.

Mikel Bruce with WebFlexor Yoga Websites (www.websitesforyoga.com) recommends adding a form to your website offering some type of free analysis or a free offer. This will often times initiate the sales process by allowing you to develop a contact with the potential student to determine their needs and to educate them as to how you can become a solution for their needs. Don't look at closing and selling as a way of manipulating your prospective students, but as an opportunity for you to show them that your service can improve their health and well-being. It is very important to be successful at closing and selling so that you are not only comfortable with your service, but you feel that there is a great need for your service. Your job is to be more proactive in terms of making others aware that they need your service. As you probably know, there is a great deal of resistance to change amongst those considering taking yoga and selling and closing are the ways of overcoming that resistance.

Additional Closing Tips

* Ask for the business * Ask for the business again * Ask for commitment using the alternate choice close * Create a sense of urgency with temporary discounts and promotions * Keep your energy and enthusiasm high, don't lose steam at the end * Don't oversell, ask for the business and quietly wait for a response * Move into closing seamlessly and without hesitation * Visualize yourself successfully getting the business

Remember to not be afraid to promote your services proactively. Most yoga teachers know that most people need their services, so take it on as a conscious mission to learn more about the sales and closing processes and to implement as many techniques as possible so that you can help more people get onto the path of yoga. It is important to have a web presence in today's market since the vast majority of new students use the Internet to find new teachers and studios. If you are looking to develop a professional web presence and succeed on the web, WebFlexor Yoga specializes in affordable and quality websites for Yoga Teachers and Studios.

Team Work? No Thanks! by Peter Peterka

We might as well admit it: we hate working in a team.

Years ago when we still worked at corporate, we'd shrink in dismay at being assigned to a team to make certain changes in a policy or in a process. Our first reaction was always, "another traffic congestion in the making." To us, team work was synonymous to excessive yak-yak-yak, delays, unnecessary activity and frequent meetings with no meeting of the minds.

We're sure we're not the only ones who feel this way. Our dislike for team work was confirmed when we were downsized over two years ago. Instead of looking for another job, we decided to go it solo. Friends and family warned us of the dangers of being a solitary worker.

You know something? We proved them wrong. Solitary work was our passport to happiness. Perhaps it's the nature of our work, we don't know. But one thing was clear: going back to the workforce only to work in teams was out of the question. It's been over two years and there are certainly no regrets.

Caveat: what's right for us may not be right for others. Team work is still a value cherished by companies. Team work is a virtue and it does generate benefits. Team work brings out the best in people; it also serves as a filtering process for great and mediocre ideas. The idea behind team work is to combine the thinking and experiences of others and to fuel motivation and initiative.

There's strength in numbers, so the saying goes. So for those of you who like working in teams to carry out change, what makes for good team work?

Hail to the Chief!

The one thing that team leaders must be careful about is to NOT let teams waste time and resources. To do that, these measures are essential -

1. Let's be specific - it's fine to do a song and dance about goals and objectives but if they're too general, they run the risk of being unattainable or unrealistic. A bad goal is: let's cut costs on the factory floor. A good goal is: monitoring of expenses on the factory floor reveals that 23% of raw materials are wasted. Let's cut that down to 15% in three months.

2. Let's share the wealth - when team members agree to work on a project, they like to think that their efforts will be recognized and properly compensated for. This is true especially when workers are asked to take on additional work by sitting in a specially-formed committee and are still expected to do their own work with no decrease in productivity levels. While you can't promise fat bonuses or perks, assure team members that there are rewards waiting for those who contribute to the group effort.

3. Let's get some division of labor going - the role of team leader is obvious enough. A leader leads, supervises, and accepts responsibility for progress. What about the members? A structure - it doesn't have to be an org chart - and a definition and assignment of roles are required. Who will take care of monitoring factory workers, who will inspect raw materials, who will look after machine maintenance, who will do the statistical analysis of idle machine-worker times?

4. Let's get on board the time capsule - the team leader must be firm about performance levels. He or she should state at the outset what minimum level of performance will be acceptable. How team members will interact with each other should also be described. What measuring tools will be employed to gauge success? And what are our target completion dates?

5. Let's find out what's going on - keeping everyone in the loop about the project is indispensable. Clear communications at all times is vital. No one should withhold information. Accomplishments must be shared. Also, credit must be given to where it's due. Make sure everyone understands the meaning of "intellectual honesty."

Eliminate Deadwood

We said earlier that the purpose of a team is to filter good ideas from bad and to draw upon the experiences of others so that the learning curve for less experienced members is not steep. It can happen that one member will stick out like a sore thumb, be uncooperative, disruptive and be an irritant to other members. Non-performers are found everywhere. The team leader must immediately eliminate members who are draining the team's resources and taxing the patience of team members.

By eliminating the deadwoods, we are sending a clear message to the group about the values that are cherished and behavior that won't be tolerated at any cost.

A Peek into Business Process Re-engineering by Peter Peterka

Business process re-engineering (BPR) sounds esoteric at best, and maybe a little pretentious. Wouldn't it be simpler to say business process change?

Most people understand what a business process is but when you combine it with re-engineering, it suddenly sounds vague.

The ProSci-sponsored BPR Online Learning Center calls a business process "a set of activities that transform a set of inputs into a set of outputs (goods or services) for another person or process using people and tools."

It is simple. The way we interpret that is:

-there are many ways of doing business,
-when one of those ways does not work or is considered to be ineffective it has to be improved,
-certain elements are introduced to make it better ("inputs"),
-those elements translate into a better service of product,
-that product or service is supposed to serve another person (a customer, a supplier, a partner)

That's basic enough, but why do business processes have to be re-engineered?

It's All About the Customer (and Competition)

The philosophy behind business process re-engineering is to delight the customer. By delighting him, we get to keep him, turning him into a faithful disciple.

Competitors have a sneaky way of snatching customers away from us. It's not because this world is full of cunning and evil people, it's because we tend to sit on our bottoms and think that we've finally got it made. We've become lax.

Business process improvement, according to ProSci, is not be confused with business process re-engineering. Instead of improving on current processes, the re-engineering concept says that because the process is no longer viable, it has to be replaced, abandoned. There's a need to establish a clean slate, as the BPR Online Learning Center teaches us.

Business process re-engineering, just like the DMAIC in Six Sigma, presupposes a series of stages: stage 1 involves a definition of the project - its rationale, objectives and scope. Stage 2 covers the entire learning process wherein we obtain as much information as we can about our customers, employees, suppliers and competitors - including non-competitors and align that new information with technology.

Armed with this knowledge, the next stage - stage 3 - is to set up our mission. Others call it a vision of the future. This requires a new set of business processes. Once we've determined the desired goal of this transition, we move on to the next stage which calls for a plan of action that allows us to measure the gap between our company's present state and where we want it to go.

When we get to this stage, solutions logically follow.

If you're still wondering what distinguishes business process improvement from business process re-engineering, think of the starting point: are you starting from an existing process and want to improve on it, or do you want to start from scratch?

Thanks to Information Technology

Jump to globalization. We're ushering in new technologies and they're coming faster than we can learn them. There's also this whole new talk about customer relationship management (CRM) strategies. We're huffing and puffing and bursting at the seams. Businesses that have not adapted to global trends or introduced newer technologies into their operations will be clobbered by the competition. Today's companies cannot afford to sit back and watch while others struggle with changes in the industry.

Thanks to information technology and the creation of new business models, the world of e-commerce has given new meaning to the way we do business. As Hui-Liang Tsai puts it, "e-commerce is no longer a way to gain competitive advantage, it is a competitive imperative." (Information Technology and Business Process Re-engineering: New Perspectives and Strategies, Praeger Publishers, Connecticut, 2003). While companies are trying to keep up with technologies, customers are also changing. They are more demanding and are never satisfied. They fall out of love, and don't necessarily have to explain why.

Picture the speed with which information is transmitted with just a click of the mouse. It used to be that urgent documents had to be couriered by special messenger or faxed immediately; today, documents are electronically portable. Mr. Tsai says that this phenomenon alone is producing a new crop of workers - he calls them knowledge workers. We are seeing the transformation of industrial society into an information society.

Progress in information technology is only one of the numerous reasons why companies have embraced business process re-engineering. If organizations desperately want to succeed, first they need information - truckloads of it. Second, they need to know how to turn that information to their advantage. The practice of business process re-engineering can refine a lot of that information into digestible parts.

What's the Game Plan? by Peter Peterka

Browse through any management book these days and you'll be amazed at the number of concepts that have appeared in the last decade: SWOT analysis, business process re-engineering, CRM, competitive advantage, analysis tools, fix-it tools and measuring tools.

One frequently used (and overused) term is strategic planning. Look at any mid-size to large corporation, and we're sure there's at least one Vice President for Strategic Planning. If you really think about it, it would suffice to say "planning" because planning implies that there's some strategy involved. It would also suffice to say "strategizing" simply because it implies that planning is involved.

What makes for good planning in the context of change?

1. Don't just brainstorm with team members. Jot down ideas that are worth reviewing. Have you ever walked into a room and noticed that meeting attendees are verbalizing, trying to outsmart one another but no one seems to be jotting anything down? When ideas are tossed about, someone should be taking notes. At the end of the day, who is going to remember those ideas to which everyone said "aha!"

By putting discussions into paper, team members can decide at the next session what issues merit a repeat discussion.

2. Organize ideas by starting with the basics. Here's an example of how you can arrange your planning:

Question: What specific change do we want to implement in the customer service department? Answer: Include another shift to accommodate customers from Asia. This means we need employees to work from the hours of 9 pm to 5 am the next day. Question: How many more employees do we need? Answer: Let's start with four and see if we need to add to that number. Question: What languages are we looking at? Answer: Since China is our biggest market, we need Mandarin and Cantonese speakers. We probably also need people who are fluent in Hindi and Korean. Question: So how soon do we need to implement this midnight shift? Answer: In two months - to align it with our product launch in Shanghai. Question: How much will this cost in terms of manpower and facilities? Answer: Details will follow, but we're looking at a ballpark figure of $75,000 a year.

By breaking down discussions into smaller components, it is easier to identify direction and objectives that are realistic. Imagine a situation where team members say, "we need more customer service people" without explaining the how, why, when, where and who.

3. Once the "start-up" information is settled, think of the possible problems and obstacles you're likely to encounter together with potential solutions. Listing problems is the easy part. The harder task is jotting down possible solutions. Let's take the example above:

Potential problem # 1: We may be able to recruit people who speak these languages but they have zero experience in customer service:

Possible solutions: (a) recruit them anyway and then train them in customer service, (b) see if there are personnel in your China and India branches who can double up as customer reps (c) outsource the customer service midnight shift to a provider country or (d) ask suppliers and distributors if they can provide a solution.

Potential problem # 2: Management might disallow the $75K budget.

Possible solutions: (a) prepare arguments justifying the cost, (b) come up with actual and projected statistics on how many people from Asia are calling or e-mailing us weekly to ask about the product, (c) how much more sales can we expect if we beef up customer service to exclusively serve Asian customers, (d) do a comparison chart of competitors who already have a customer service department servicing Asia and are doing very well.

4. "Just do it." One reason why a group fails miserably at executing a plan is that there's an element of laziness or a waning of enthusiasm when the initial excitement wears off. Taking the same example above, one week has passed and the justification for adding a midnight shift to be sent to management hasn't been written. When the person assigned to do it is asked why, he says, "oh I found out that Mr. Jones is out of town for three weeks. So I haven't done it." What this person fails to understand is that even if Mr. Jones is away, he can get cracking with the arguments and could even send it by e-mail to Mr. Jones. Why wait? Just do it!

5. Assess your plan periodically. Circumstances can force a change of priorities, so looking at the plan from time to time will help you determine if changes need to be made.

You need a plan to work with. A sound plan is one that has foresight and alternatives in the event certain activities don't work out.
